Pac-10 Preview: Week 5

Written by Bob Grim (Texas St.) 52 Thursday, September 25, 2008

USC @ Oregon State:  The Trojans open Pac-10 play against the Beavers.  The last time USC played in Corvallis they were ranked number 3 in the country and they lost 33-31.  The Trojans will be ready this week, as they begin their journey to run the table against Pac-10 competition.  Oregon State head coach Mike Riley was the offensive coordinator at USC in the nineties under then head coach John Robinson, so Mike understands the USC football tradition.  Look for a closer game than many predict.  Trojans by 14.

Stanford @ Washington:  The 0 and 3 Huskies have a chance against a rebuilding Cardinal team.  The Dawgs are always tough at home.  Stanford must get more consistent quarterback play and a big game from running back Toby Gerhart if they are to win.  The Huskies will need everything Jake Locker can produce and a good rush defense to stop Stanford`s running game.  Tyronne Willingham would love to beat his old team and get a few fans off his back.  Huskies by one.

Oregon @ WSU:  The Cougars lost two quarterbacks in their first win of the season last week.  This week they start redshirt freshman, Marshall Lobbestael at quarterback and he may give their offense a boost.  Marshall was named Pac-10 offensive player of the week, but Oregon has a spread offense the Cougars are not likely to slow down.  Oregon has their own quarterback problem, last week they went to fifth string redshirt freshman, Darron Thomas and he responded with three TD passes against Boise State in a losing effort.  The Cougars do not have enough tools in the tool box.  Ducks by 21.

Colorado State @ California:  Jeff Tedford has had an extra week to get his Golden Bears ready for this contest after dropping a game at Maryland.  California has too much speed in the backfield and they are starting to get solid play from quarterback Kevin Riley.  If Cal`s defense shows up this week and does not spot the Rams four touchdowns in the first half the Bears will win handily.  California by 14.

Fresno State @ UCLA:  Pat Hill`s Bulldogs are nationally ranked and they take their “We`ll play anyone, anywhere, anytime attitude” to the Rose Bowl.  If the Bruins come to the party with the same offense and defense they have displayed in the past two games, the Pac-10 will take another hit as a conference without strength.  The Bruins are banged up and not playing with any confidence.  Fresno State by 7.

Arizona and Arizona State have a bye this week.  Arizona is on the rise, while ASU is attempting to regroup after back to back losses.

Here`s hoping your team is a “HotTicket” this weekend!
