HTS RANKINGS: WEEK 4

Written by Site Administrator (Sam Houston St.) 49 Wednesday, September 17, 2008

1.USC:  Number One will only lose in Pac-10 play if they have a bad day, turn the ball over and beat themselves.
2.Oregon:  The Ducks move to second this week with an overtime victory over Purdue.  Injuries continue to plague this team.  The spread takes its toll on quarterbacks, up next freshman Chris Harper and Jr College transfer Jeremiah Masoli.  Oregon plays Boise State at home, this will be the first real test of the year for the Bronco's.
3.Arizona State:  Rudy Carpenter has been upset all week about last weeks loss to UNLV, one the Sun Devils let get away from them.  Arizona couldn't put the Rebels away in the second half.   This week….the Georgia Bulldogs, a team with terrific speed, on both sides of the ball.  Arizona State will have to be near perfect to pull off the upset.
4.California:  The Golden Bears have the week off and they need it after dropping a game to Maryland.  East Coast time did not agree with the men from Berkeley.  By the time they awoke the game was half over and they were to far down to recover.
5.Arizona:  The Wildcats are 2 and 1 on the season after dropping a contest to Rocky Long and the New Mexico Lobo's.  This week they open conference play against the UCLA Bruins at the  Rose Bowl.  This game will give us a better idea where this team actually falls in the Pac-10 rankings.
6.Oregon State:  The Beavers seem to be holding to form, start slow and build.  They had a nice victory last week against Hawaii, but the Trojans visit Corvallis next Thursday night.  It's time for Mike Riley to break out the old speech, "it's not the best team that wins…it's the team that plays best that wins".
7.Stanford:  Still building, still trying to decide on a quarterback, need to rediscover the running game.  The Cardinal take on the San Jose State Spartans.
8.UCLA:  Things looked rosy after the Bruins opened with an overtime win against Tennessee, but last week BYU performed in a way that left the Bruins looking totally inept in all phases of the game.  This team is probably not as good as their first win would suggest and not as bad as they looked losing 59-0 last week.
9.Washington:  Thank goodness a week off… after suffering through the toughest opening schedule in the nation!  Next week's Stanford game will likely determine the season for the Huskies.
10.Washington State:  The Cougs are really struggling under new head coach Paul Wulff.  Almost every phase of the game is undecided, the no huddle offense… is no offense yet, the defense has been porous and special  teams are not  so great.  Paul needs more talent and he will get it, in due time.

Back to you next week.

Sounds about how I had pictured the season. I am hoping for a few upsets coming up. Perhaps USC at Oregon State, again> :)
